The red panda lives high up in the Himalayan mountains at a height of 2,000 to 4,800 meters. This small animal, that spends most of its time sitting in trees, is active in the early morning and early evening. It has hairs on the soles of its feet which stop it from slipping over and also keep its feet warm.
The red panda washes itself like a cat. First it licks the soles of its front paws. Then it rubs them over its forehead and ears. But it doesn't drink nearly as politely as that. It slurps up the water! And what about eating? The red panda sticks its front paw into mushy food and then licks it off. It eats bamboo shoots, but also fruit, berries, seeds and sometimes small animals, insects and mushrooms.
